Statement by the President on the Death of Former President Roh Moo-hyun of the Republic of Korea

I was saddened by the news of the death of former President Roh Moo-hyun of the Republic of Korea.
During his tenure, President Roh contributed to the strong and vital relationship between the United States and the Republic of Korea.
On behalf of the government of the United States, I offer my condolences to his family and to the Korean people.

대한민국 노무현 전 대통령의 서거 소식에 비통한 심정을 금할 길이 없습니다. 고인의 죽음은 우리 모두뿐 아니라, 특히 민주주의와 인권 수호를 위해 앞장섰던 지도자를 잃게 된 한국민에게 큰 손실이 아닐 수 없습니다.
노 전 대통령은 한미관계를 현대화하는데 중요한 기여를 했습니다. 대통령 재임기간 중 양국은 한국의 미국 비자면제프로그램 가입과 주한미군 통합을 위해 노력하는 한편, 모든 작전통제권을 한국군에게 이전하기로 합의하는 등 이미 힘차고 역동적인 양국 관계를 더욱 넓히고 공고히 하는 여러 구상을 시행했습니다. 2007년에 서명한 한미 자유무역협정 역시 노 전 대통령 임기 중 체결된 것으로 양국 관계에 중요한 이정표로 남아 있습니다.
미국을 대신하여 노 전 대통령의 유족과 한국민에 깊은 애도의 뜻을 전합니다.

Statement by Ambassador Kathleen Stephens on the Death of Former President Roh Moo-hyun

I was deeply saddened by the news of the death of former President Roh Moo-hyun of the Republic of Korea. His passing is a loss to us all, but especially to the people of Korea, who have lost a leader and a powerful voice for democracy and human rights.
President Roh made important contributions to modernizing the relationship between the United States and the Republic of Korea.
During his tenure as President, the U.S. and Korea began several initiatives to broaden and deepen our already vital and dynamic relationship, including working toward a Visa Waiver Program, working to consolidate the U.S. military presence in Korea, and agreement to transfer full operational command authority to Korean forces. The Korea - U.S. Free Trade Agreement, signed in 2007, stands as an important milestone in relations between our two nations, achieved during President Roh's term of office.
On behalf of the United States, I offer my deepest condolences to former President Roh Moo-hyun's family, and to the Korean people. |
