“A Unified Korea?”
“통일 한국?”
Seoul is raising money for hypothetical unification with North.
남한은 북한과의 통일을 생각하며 기금을 마련하고 있는 중이다.
It was a moment in history that took the world by surprise.
그 일은 전 세계를 놀라게 한 역사적 순간이었다.
November 9th 1989... the Berlin Wall fell... helped by Germans on both sides of the iron curtain.
1989년 11월 9일, 베를린 장벽이 철의 장막을 사이에 둔 동·서독 양측의 독일인들에 의해 무너졌다.
It was peaceful and jubilant.
(분위기는) 평화로웠고 환희에 차있었다.
No wall separates North and South Korea... just four kilometers of no man's land... filled with thousands of landmines, kilometers of barbed wire and hundreds of thousands of soldiers on both sides.
남북 간에 장벽은 없다… 단지 수천 개의 지뢰, 수 킬로미터의 철조망, 그리고 수십만 명의 군사들이 주둔하고 있는 4 킬로미터의 무인지대만 존재할 뿐이다.
Few predict a peaceful unification in the near future.
가까운 미래에 평화로운 통일을 예상하는 사람들은 거의 없다.
And yet Seoul has started to prepare for just that outcome. Unification Minister Yu Woo-ik has made so called Unification Jars to start collecting money from citizens.
그러나 남한은 통일 준비를 시작했다. 류우익 통일부 장관은 일명 통일항아리를 만들어 국민들로부터 기금을 모으기 시작했다.

I firmly believe unification will be achieved in my lifetime. When the German President visited, he told me the biggest mistake that the German government made was not being able to prepare the people for unification. I do not want to repeat that kind of mistake on the Korean peninsula.
나는 내 생전에 통일이 이뤄질 거라고 확신합니다. 얼마 전에 독일 전 대통령이 방문해 말씀하길 독일이 통일을 한 과정에서 한 가장 큰 실수는 통일에 대비해 국민들을 준비시키지 못한 점이라고 했습니다. 나는 우리가 독일이 한 실수를 반복해서는 안 된다고 생각합니다.

Bike rides have been organized around the country to highlight the issue... but the younger generation who have known nothing but a divided Korea have little interest.
(통일부는) 통일기금마련에 대한 인식을 높이기 위해 자전거를 타고 국토대장정을 기획하기도 했다. 그러나 분단된 한반도밖에 모르는 젊은 세대는 관심이 별로 없다.

I tell the younger generation that peace and stability in Northeast Asia can be permanently achieved once we're unified and we'll be able to create more job opportunities only with unification can we achieve our full potential.
나는 젊은 세대들에게 동아시아의 평화와 안정은 한반도의 통일이 이루어졌을 때 비로소 항구적으로 성취된다고 이야기 합니다. 그리고 통일이 이뤄졌을 때 일자리도 많이 생기고 우리는 비로소 잠재력을 한껏 꽃피우게 된다는 점을 얘기합니다.

This cap in hand approach is not new... in 1998 the government asked the public to give up their gold to help the country recover from the Asian financial crisis.
“성금 운동”(cap in hand approach)은 새로운 것이 아니다. 1998년 한국 정부는 당시 아시아 금융 위기 회복을 위해 범국민 금 모으기 운동을 실시한바 있다.
The response was extraordinary... millions of citizens donated wedding rings and family treasures to be melted down for sale on the international markets... more than two billion dollars worth was collected in just four months.
이에 대한 호응은 놀라웠다. 수백만 명의 국민들은 국제 시장에 팔기 위해 결혼반지 및 가족 귀중품을 기부했고 불과 4개월 만에 20억 달러 상당의 금을 모을 수 있었다.
Passion for unification is more tempered... it's hard to rally a nation with no imminent crisis in sight.
통일을 향한 열정은 더 시들해졌다. 임박한 위기가 보이지 않는 상황에서 한 국가를 결집시키는 것은 어렵다.
As for whether it could be as peaceful as it was in Germany... the government says that's the scenario that they are planning for but they're realistic enough to realize there are no guarantees.
한국정부는, 독일에서처럼 평화로운 통일을 계획하고 있다고 말하면서도, 이에 대한 담보가 없다는 점을 인식하면서 현실적으로 통일문제를 다루고 있다.
