< 미합중국 대통령 선언문 > 한국 전쟁 정전협정이 판문점에서 체결된지 56년이 지난 오늘 미국은 한국 전쟁 참전 용사들의 용기와 희생에 감사를 표한다. 1953년 7월 27일 종식된 치열한 3년간의 한국 전쟁 기간중 60만명 이상의 미군과 연합군이 목숨을 잃었다. 많은 참전 용사들이 또한 부상당하고 전쟁포로가 되거나 실종되었다. 연합군의 깃발 아래 참전 용사들은 한반도의 자유와 민주주의를 위해 헌신적으로 싸웠으며 이들은 끊임 없는 존경과 감사를 받을 자격이 있다. 우리는 매일 한국전쟁 참전용사들의 희생을 생각한다. 한국 전쟁 참전 용사 기념관이 이들을 영구적으로 기리고자 워싱턴에 세워졌다. 노간주나무 덤불과 열을 지어 있는 화강암 사이를 행진하며, 군인, 해병대, 해군, 공군, 해양경비대가 그들을 바라보는 모두에게 수많은 미국인들이 극복한 위대한 도전을 묵묵히 상기시킨다. 미국과 한국간의 돈독한 파트너십은 또한 우리 미군의 존재를 자랑스럽게 입증한다. 오늘 우리는 한국 전쟁 참전 용사의 용맹과, 그들이 가족과 함께 평화를 위해 치른 엄청난 희생을 기억하고 기념한다. 따라서 이제 나, 버락 오바마 미국 대통령은 미국 헌법 및 법률이 부여한 권한에 따라 2009년 7월 27일을 ‘한국 전쟁 참전용사 휴전 기념일’로 선포한다. 나는 모든 미국인이 참전용사를 기억하고 감사를 표하는 적절한 의식과 활동을 통해 이날을 기념하기를 요구한다. 또한 연방정부 기관과 이해단체, 조직, 개인이 한국에서 희생당한 미국인들을 기념하여 2009년 7월 27일 성조기를 조기로 게양할 것을 요청한다. 이에 대한 증거로 서기 2009년, 미국 독립 234번째 해, 7월 24번째 날, 여기에 내 손을 얹노라. 버락 오바마 ============================================================== National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day, 2009 The White House Office of the Press Secretary For Immediate Release July 24, 2009 By the President of the United States of America A Proclamation Fifty-six years after the signing of the Military Armistice Agreement at Panmunjom, Americans remain grateful for the courage and sacrifice of our Korean War veterans. More than 600,000 United States and allied combatants lost their lives in Korea during the 3 years of bitter warfare that ended on July 27, 1953. Many were also injured, taken as prisoners of war, and missing in action. These dedicated servicemen and women, under the banner of the United Nations, fought to secure the blessings of freedom and democracy on the Korean Peninsula, and they deserve our unending respect and gratitude. Every day we are reminded of the selfless service of these veterans. The Korean War Veterans Memorial stands in our Nation's Capital as an enduring tribute to them. Marching among juniper bushes and rows of granite, Soldiers, Marines, Sailors, Airmen, and Coast Guardsmen silently remind all who glimpse their faces of the great challenges that so many Americans overcame. The strong partnership between the United States and the Republic of Korea is also a proud testament to our men and women in uniform. Today we remember and honor the valor of Korean War veterans and the extraordinary sacrifices that they and their families made in the cause of peace. NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim July 27, 2009, as National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day. I call upon all Americans to observe this day with appropriate ceremonies and activities that honor and give thanks to our distinguished Korean War veterans. I also ask Federal departments and agencies and interested groups, organizations, and individuals to fly the flag of the United States at half-staff on July 27, 2009, in memory of the Americans who died as a result of their service in Korea.
